Paris Diaries 11,35', 2019
A young and unsuccessful artist tries to find a theme for her short film in Paris. She gets overwhelmed by too many topics and ends up just recording the process. Paris Diaries depicts the challenges of filmmaking in an absurd and spontaneous fashion that interweaves rough interviews and personal exploration. This hybrid of a documentary and essay film captures tangibly zeitgeist of the city.
Hotel President 5', 2018
Hotel President opens a multifaceted view to a centrally located four-star hotel in Berlin that is currently used to accommodate asylum seekers. The short film has interviews with asylum seekers, whose thoughts are contrasted with portraits of presidents, prime ministers and other politicians who seem to be giving the asylum seekers a warm welcome to the “West”.
Govadas 8,43', 2018
Govadas explores the contradiction and harmony between humans and nature through Sámi poetry. The cyclical perception of time among the only indigenous people living in the European Union is presented in the work as unfolding forms and layers based on the archive material from the 1940's and the super 8 mm film footage from 2010’s. Govadas creates a kinetic meditation on time, memory, landscape and the ruptures between them.
Family Portraits in the Blink of an Eye 3,30' 2017
This 2-channel video installation examines the relationship between painting, photography, and moving image as a form of a portrait. In four scenes, persons, some of them family members, look a long while in the camera. All scenes are combined with a single blink of an eye, the only movement of the performers during scenes. The illusion of "stop image" is emphasized by the framed projections and the compositions.
The Sound of Tempest 30', 2016
The Sound of Tempest -artistic project includes an experimental film, live music, live sound design and performance art. Artists of this work are film director Elina Oikari, composer and violinist Aino Eerola and sound designer Jyri Pirinen. The work is a multi sensory combination of a film, live sound design, electronically modified violin music and a subtle performance show. The work has connections to William Shakespeare's classical play The Tempest.
Le Temps de l'Escargot 20', 2016
Le Temps de l’Escargot captures mental and physical landscapes in Paris. These cinematic landscapes interwoven with the director’s personal exploration. "The face" of the city is shown as sincere and paradoxical at the same time.
Change of Faces, 7', 2016
The short film / video work describes an internal and external change of the landscapes in Lapland on 21st century. The work is shown together with composer Outi Tarkiainen's song cycle "Eanan, giđa nieida". The work constructs a poetic and multi-level vision of the Sami people's experiences from different times to this day.
The Tempest 40', 2013
The film speaks about otherness through its characters; all of them are looking for food, something to drink or someone to love. Apart from the central figure Prospero, their intentions seem to be hard to achieve. The director has translated Shakespeare’s classical play into timeless visions of today.
Missing Tapes from a Highway Set 8' /16'
The film footage works on an intimate level, like a diary, but it also associates with the symptoms of recession. Some of the filming locations are the same where Hollywood classics like "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) were shot. These locations intertwine with my own experiences from the road and people I met. Thoughts run through nostalgic super 8 mm material as well as bleak digital videotape. Olavi Louhivuori, a Finnish jazz drummer, composed music for this film.
Pelléas et Mélisande, Part I, 16'
"Pelléas et Mélisande" (2011/2012) is a silent film adaptation of the play written by Maurice Maeterlinck. Maeterlinck's story comes visible by actors seeking to come together through different layers of water and shadows. The film has been screened with two different compositions. It was originally made for Jean Sibelius' composition: Pelléas och Mélisande. A young Finnish composer Mari Sainio made music for the film in 2012, it has minimalistic and poetic elements which resonate with the film.
